Becoming a Better Manager: "Don’t Manage Time"
Speaker:
  Barb Kurka, Executive Coach
Have you ever complained about having too much time? How many time management systems have you tried?  How long is your to-do list? Meetings. Deadlines. Employees to manage.   Performance evaluations.  The CEO wants you to find more spending cuts.  Your staff want more money, or more time off. Your spouse complains that you're constantly connected and your kids wonder who you are.  Your eating habits are out of whack...and your back may be, too, since you don't exercise the way you want to.  You're beginning to think the hamster wheel may be a good screen saver.  This interactive workshop will help you discover how not managing time can make you a better manager, spouse, parent…and more.

Using Technology to Your Advantage
Moderator:
  Lou Trebino, KPMG
Panelists: Yang Adija, Turner Broadcasting System; additional TBA
Technology is shaping dramatically how media and entertainment companies conduct business 24/7. The impact of technology, such as cloud, mobilization and wireless enablement is quickly changing the face of how content is consumed and produced.  The lines between professional  and personal use of technology have blurred and are quickly being erased.   Companies are at a pivotal point to leverage the myriad devices familiar to their employees, and migrating applications with an eye on flexibility, scalability, and cost shifting.  How will companies think strategically while also staying nimble enough to quickly adapt to new consumer technology as it brought to market and more importantly, the demands of the workforce?  Hear firsthand how your peers are addressing the technology challenges of today, tomorrow and years to come to stay ahead of this highly competitive landscape.

General Session

Welcome: Jay Dardenne, Lt. Governor of Louisana
Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne is the ideal person to open Media Finance Focus 2013.  His undergraduate degree in Journalism from LSU (now the Manship School of Mass Communication) is testament to his passion for the fourth estate.  A longstanding involvement in legislative initiatives designed to support and promote the state’s media industry demonstrates his understanding of the many contributions media businesses make to states including Louisiana.  In addition, attendees can expect to learn lessons about responding to a changing environment; when he assumed control of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism he introduced a new brand for the state: Louisiana: Pick Your Passion.

Keynote: Leigh Gallagher, Asst. Managing Editor, Fortune Magazine
Leigh Gallagher oversees some of FORTUNE’s most recognizable franchises, including “Best Companies to Work For” and “40 Under 40.”  An experienced business news commentator, she has appeared on a variety of television programs and is a regular guest on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and  NPR’s “Marketplace.”  She is also the author of the forthcoming book, The End of the Suburbs: Where the American Dream is Moving. Today Ms. Gallagher will provide attendees with her observations about doing business in a multi-media world.  What are the changes and how are she and her colleagues adapting to them?  What are the challenges and opportunities?  How does she see these changes or this evolution impacting the media consumer?  In addition she will share her thoughts, as a content producer, on what she believes the financial team needs to know.

Moderator: Jonathan Cohen, Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer LLP
Scott Goodwin, National Association of Broadcasters
    John Sanders, Bond and Pecaro
    Jay Adrick, Harris Broadcast
In the wake of legislation enacted last year, the Federal Communications Commission is in the midst of developing rules for the first-ever “incentive auction” to repurpose up to 120 MHz of the UHF television band to mobile broadband use.  The FCC is planning to conduct this auction in 2014, and television broadcasters are given the opportunity (but are not required) to offer to relinquish some or all of their spectrum for this purpose in exchange for cash.  Regardless of whether a station decides participates in the auction process, it likely will be affected by a post-auction repacking of the TV band. In this session, industry experts will explain numerous aspects of the planned broadcast incentive auction about which station owners and executives should be thinking, including the opportunities and risks presented by both the auction and the subsequent repacking.  Among other things, they will discuss the current state of play in the FCC rulemaking process, broadcasters’ options in the incentive auction, how station owners should think about valuation in an incentive auction, and the mechanics, timing and costs of repacking.

  • Media Ad Sales Pricing
    Moderator:  Jeff Farin, Deloitte
    Speaker:  Chuck Davenport, Deloitte Consulting
Pricing can no longer be an after-thought, with the pricing strategy and rate structure applied after the service offering is developed. Increasingly, clients want unique pricing structures that include shared accountability – this applies not only to agencies, but is part of a larger trend across many service business industries. Successfully aligning interests requires integrating the pricing strategy as a core component of the offer – using price to help determine what is included, how is success defined and how services are delivered.
This session will discuss the trends learned from both advertising and other segments to frame the role of pricing in the sales process.  It will also see how the leading class pricing organizations find success with client procurement teams, who have been very effective at driving down rates. This includes the importance of differentiating cost vs. fees vs. value. Successful alternative fee programs are not positioned as new forms of discounting, but are leveraged as a different way to measure and compensate for value. Finally the session will cover the concept of “losing on price”.

  • Tackling the Challenge of Streamlining your Royalty Payments
    Moderator: Colin O’Keeffe, Oracle Media
    Panelist: Tripp Partain, Oracle
Exploiting new opportunities in a digital universe has forced media companies to adopt new business models without the luxury of adapting their old business support processes or systems.  Paying royalties based on a growing set of revenue channels across an ever-expanding landscape of rights holders is more complicated than ever. Even the world’s most sophisticated media companies relegate this challenge to rooms full of accounting clerks armed with paper reports and spreadsheets. Over time, this manual approach exposes the organization to risks of mis-calculations, over-payments and unfavorable audit scrutiny.  This session will explore the inherent difficulties that media companies face when trying to standardize these processes and why the risks of continuing manual processes are reaching a boiling point. Participants in this session will leave with a better sense of how to mitigate the risk of, and ensure greater compliance to, this mission critical process.

Investigative Journalism:  What Are the Legal and Ethical Boundaries? Exposing bad behavior is a worthy goal of the investigative journalist. But how far can – and should – a reporter go to get the story?  When is it ok to use hidden cameras or telephoto lenses?  Can a reporter pay a source if that’s what it takes to learn information of legitimate interest to the public?  What about reporters invited by law enforcement to ride along in the police car and video the big bust?   Do they owe any legal or ethical obligations to those caught on tape?  Can a reporter misrepresent her identity or intentions to get access to private places or get a source to open up?  Join us as we explore both the legal and ethical answers to these questions, which have become increasingly important with the advent of new technologies and increasing competition in the media marketplace.

Digital distribution channels are transforming the media sector, forever changing the traditional content landscape.  The vast availability of content on demand via mobile devices and over the internet has increased the consumers’ appetite for content and their expectations as to immediacy.  It has also brought many new players into the market.  With the explosion of mobile devices and the ability to consume content on multiple devices at any one time – the current business model is fast changing for both media companies and advertisers.  As digital multi-tasking becomes more prevalent, the advertising industry needs to rethink its model for pricing and delivery.  Media companies will have to make it clear how they are meeting customer needs.  They also have to address the impact of digital transformation on their relationship with content owners.

    Moderator: Gina Gin, PwC
    Speaker: John Swadener, PwC
Globally, entertainment and media spend lagged worldwide GDP growth but emerging markets are powering growth.  Three new countries are expected to pass through $25B in annual spend by 2015.  In parallel to this growth, the digitally empowered consumer is causing companies to accelerate their shift from offline to online as digital marketing spend continues its impressive growth rates.  In response to this growth, over three-quarters of entertainment and media CEOs see a need for ‘some’ or a ‘significant’ change in strategy in the next three years in response to consumers’ increasing demands.  As marketers spend more on media, there is more demand for flexibility, transparency and accountability.  PwC starts with a quick world-wide tour of the macro-economic trends underlying entertainment & media spend while balancing the perspectives of the CFO, CEO and Customer Officers as the digital transformation continues.

These questions and more will be addressed in this highly controversial subject that has and continues to be a challenge to MVPD’s while being a life saving revenue source for broadcasters and their networks.

Building a Better Business: It’s the Peoplework – Not the Paperwork!

Motivational speaker Bruce Wilkinson, Workplace Consultants

Economic downturns, customer expectations, employment issues, technology challenges, expanding regulatory compliance and multi-generation employee communication concerns can take their toll on a sometimes overworked workforce and especially managers and team leaders. As a result, many organizations have decided to implement a positive and consistent workplace culture through their mission, vision, values, goals and strategic objectives. Unfortunately, the reality is that organizational culture doesn’t always translate into a matching employee climate at the first-line supervisor and employee level. This highly engaging, content-driven and persuasively presented program that will demonstrate how to Build a Better Business by implementing an inspired first line leadership and value-based employee accountability culture and climate of trust, respect, integrity, teamwork, communication, inclusiveness, leadership, service, change and personal responsibility. Remember, it’s the Peoplework – Not The Paperwork!
