Do Your Pre-Auction Financial Homework

Since broadcasters won’t know how much cash other stations in their market are willing to accept, it is even more important to be knowledgeable about the factors that will affect a station’s ultimate net gain before deciding to participate. Here are some tips about understanding the auction’s financial implications.

The 64,000 Question was a 1950s CBS game show in which contestants could win up to $64,000 by answering questions about a specific subject. Today it could just as easily be used to describe the challenge broadcasters face when deciding if and how they will participate in the upcoming FCC television spectrum auction. That’s particularly true when you consider that estimates for the auction’s top bids would exceed the present value of $64,000 — more than $500,000 — by as much as 18 fold.[full article]

COMMITTEES – Now More Valuable for You

Get the Most from your Membership - Join a Committee

Committees and committee members are integral to MFM’s success because they ensure the association is focused on the interests of MFM & BCCA members.  Defined by subject area or media business type, committees provide members with a smaller setting in which to meet and discuss industry issues.  Current committees include:  Accounting Standards; BCCA; Cable, Interactive & Digital Media; Membership and Marketing; Newspaper; Radio; Tax Advisory; Television, Young Professionals (new) and The Financial Manager Editorial committee.

Selected committee calls include guest speakers who share their expertise on a topic of the committee’s choosing.  Guest speakers often end up being panelists at the annual conference.  Subjects covered by experts on recent committee calls have included: viewing and distributor trends; how to manage collections, advertising, billing, etc., while avoiding billing confusion; independent contractor issues and employee reclassification; programmatic buying and the future of media; revenue recognition; and digital age strategies and solutions.

In addition, committees are one to the secrets of the success of MFM’s annual conference – Media Finance Focus.  Committee members suggest topics for the conference as well as selecting coordinators and/or moderators for the sessions.
